SOUTHEND United moved to within a point of the play-offs after this win over Oldham Athletic at a packed Roots Hall.

Keenan Appiah-Forson's early header secured an important victory for the Shrimpers.

And boss Kevin Maher was delighted to get back to winning ways after a midweek defeat at Boston United.

"I'm delighted with the result and the points," said Maher. “It was important we responded from Tuesday night, even though I felt we played well in the first half there.

"I showed belief in the players to go and put it right and they did that. I'm delighted with the win."

The Shrimpers are now well placed to push for the play-offs having lost just once in ten games.

But Maher will not be getting carried away.
