7 WAYS TO POWER UP YOUR DRIVES

When it comes to reducing your handicap there's plenty of data to suggest that power off the tee is king because of the accompanying distance it brings.

Whether you struggle with generating power or unleashing it at the appropriate time, these simple tips will help you to bank extra yards on the golf course. There is a real variety of advice here, from making small adjustments to addressing the key fundamentals, but each will have a significant impact on your performance with the driver in hand and lead to longer, more powerful tee shots...

image1 Using the ground better

At address you want to feel securely planted with a nice stable base. Then, to use the ground effectively to generate power, it's important to find the correct sequence as you swing. Your contact with the ground should go lighter, heavier, lighter in that order.

imageThe first move is a corkscrew motion out of the ground. As you coil to the top (left), contact with the ground should feel a bit lighter. As you start the downswing by rotating your lower body ready to release the stored energy, you want to feel a heavier sense of pressure (above, top) before things lighten up just before impact and beyond (above, bottom).

All the top drivers on tour, like Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy, are moving up and away from the ground at the point of impact. Varying pressure at key points in the golf swing can help you generate added power with your driver.

TAYLORMADE SPIDER 5K-ZT PUTTER £449

The TaylorMade Spider family of putters has enjoyed resounding success across all professional tours and is widely regarded as one of the best ranges on the market, so how did the new Spider 5K-ZT model stack up against other zero-torque putters? The first thing I noticed when unboxing the club was its electric blue headcover, and, while it may sound odd, I think this sets the tone for the rest of the putter.

MOTOCADDY QB2 PUSH TROLLEY £219.99

It has taken Motocaddy eight years to replace its incredibly successful Cube push trolley. This kind of product life cycle is a huge rarity in this industry and testament to the quality of the original. So, 2025 finally brings the sequel – the QB2. Can it be the Godfather Part II of the push cart world (an excellent sequel), or will it turn out to be more of a Jaws II (a not-so-great follow-on).

HOW AI COULD BOOST CLUB PERFORMANCE

The prospect of AI-powered golf clubs isn’t just about hitting the ball further; it’s about a personalised, adaptive experience that could completely revolutionise how we play. Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming to be a prophet here, as we're already seeing the use of AI on products like Callaway drivers. But we could just be scratching the surface.
