5 clubs every high- handicapper should consider...

|July 2025
PGA professional Joe Ferguson plays in a lot of pro-am events, so is well placed to offer advice to high-handicap players, especially when it comes to equipment. Here, he suggests five clubs that could potentially make the game easier for them

Chipper
High-handicappers will often waste shots with lots of duffed and thinned chips. The first club I recommend for these players is a chipper. The wider, softly contoured sole is there to provide more margin for error in the strike, while the upright lie angle allows you to treat these shots more like a putt with loft, simplifying the technique and reducing the requirement for precision.
While you may be somewhat limited in the number of shots you can play with one (for example, they don't work well if you want to open the face and hit a higher shot), chippers can be absolutely fantastic for those basic greenside chips or pitches.
Zero-torque putterThe premise here is fairly simple. It's a design that helps the face to stay square relative to the path of your stroke, rather than naturally opening and closing, as traditional putters tend to encourage. These putters will benefit those who struggle to control the face, especially inside 10ft, which could be anyone from high-handicapper to tour pro.

REMOTE ELECTRIC TROLLEYS
The remote electric golf trolley has moved from a niche luxury to an incredibly popular piece of on-course technology. Just a few years ago, the market offered only a handful of contenders worth considering. Today, it is brimming with innovation, offering golfers a mix of more high-quality options as well as new ‘value’ options.

PACKAGE SETS
Why would you buy a package set as opposed to selecting different irons, woods, wedges and a putter? Primarily, convenience - it can save you hunting around and doing lots of research for all the clubs you need. For a lot of golfers, especially those who don't play very often, it's a more appealing option. Although we always recommend going down the custom-fitting route, the fact is, this isn't for everyone.

With its roots dating back to 1907 and a rudimentary nine-hole course close to what is now the town centre, Basingstoke Golf Club has enjoyed a long evolution before settling in to its exciting new home less than two years ago. It is now situated on a gently undulating and perhaps surprisingly peaceful parcel of downland just south of the M3 in Hampshire. And while the club's new course is just a well-struck drive from its previous 15th green, in
