The former triathlete sprang to prominence last month by winning the Lincoln GP. Here's how she plotted the victory

WEEK IN TRAINING LAUREN DICKSON

What was your background as a triathlete and runner?

I did athletics competitively as a junior, and then when I was 14 some of my friends introduced me to triathlon. I really focused on it when I went to university. I represented GB as a duathlete and in mountain running.

How have you found the transition to cycle racing?

The first couple of races were a really big shock to the system. I started as a cat-four, and my first race was an open race. I didn't realise that, although females can enter, it's primarily males. I was used to riding in the wheels, but never in a bunch of 80 people travelling at 40kph. My true introduction to competitive cycling before that had been through my boyfriend [Edinburgh-born professional Sean Flynn, 25, who rides for Picnic PostNL]. The first time I rode with him, I was 17 years old and I couldn't take a bottle out of the cage.

imageWhat are your ambitions for your career as a cyclist?

My dream is to turn professional. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a professional athlete. I've spoken to one WorldTour team so far.

How did you approach your winning ride in the Lincoln GP?
