Optical wrist-based heart rate monitors can be unreliable. But the Apex left us pleasantly surprised. The sensor uses a five-LED system with four photodetectors ‘reading’ your heartbeats from the back of the watch body. Provided the strap is done up nice and tight, the HR measurement is very accurate and dependable.
