TIME'S UNIQUE TAKE ON OFF-ROAD clipless pedals combines a very well-tensioned retention system alongside bags of float and an open design that sheds mud and grit brilliantly.

The ATAC's nylon-composite body wraps around a hollow stainless-steel axle that helps keep weight to a minimum. At just 290g (plus 45g pair of cleats and bolts), they're impressively light for the price: lighter than Shimano's premium XTR pedals for significantly less outlay. The body is tough enough, though it can get a few dings and battle scars.
