WHY THE CURRENT INDIAN CRICKET TEAM SUPPORT STAFF IS UNDER THE SCANNER
Cricket Today
|January 2025
Virat Kohli, the backbone of India's batting, has been dismissed six times in eight innings to deliveries pitched on the sixth stump outside off. This is not a case of being beaten by unplayable deliveries; it's a failure to adapt and learn. Kohli's insistence on chasing balls, which he should leave alone, highlights his technical...

The Indian cricket team has historically thrived under cohesive leadership, a vision, and robust support staff. Yet, as of now, these elements seem to T have fallen apart following the departure of Rahul Dravid as head coach. The 2024 T20 World Cup victory under Dravid was a high point, but his exit marked a turning point for Indian cricket. Gautam Gambhir, celebrated for his IPL success with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), took over as head coach alongside a revamped support staff. This group, including Morne Morkel (bowling coach), Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), Ryan ten Doeschate (assistant coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach), was expected to usher in a new era of dominance.
Fast-forward to the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), and India finds itself trailing 2-1 after four matches. Performances so lackluster raise serious questions about the competence of this coaching unit. Losses are inevitable in sports, but it is unacceptable how India has capitulated, celebrated mediocrity, and failed to address glaring issues.
GAUTAM GAMBHIR: A MISSTEP IN LEADERSHIP?
Gautam Gambhir's appointment as head coach came with a sense of optimism. His IPL success and aggressive mindset aligned with DREAM11 what Indian cricket needed post-Dravid. However, international cricket demands more than tactical nous; it requires man-management skills, adaptability, and an ability to inspire players to perform under pressure. Unfortunately, Gambhir's tenure has been marred by questionable decisions and an apparent inability to address critical issues. His celebrated aggression has translated into reckless decision-making rather than effectively channeling India’s talent pool. For instance, celebrating enforcing a follow-on, despite eventually losing the match, epitomizes a lack of tactical awareness. Gambhir’s focus on short-term milestones rather than long-term objectives has left the team in disarray.
