Tour of Flanders
4 April, 1999
Rapt fans urge Johan Museeuw on as he hits hard on the famous cobbles of the Muur-Kapelmuur in the 1999 Tour of Flanders.
Wearing the iconic kit of the Mapei team, the 'Lion of Flanders' romps up the climb on his way to an eventual third place behind winner Peter Van Petegem and the late Franck Vandenbroucke.
Back then the Muur was the penultimate climb in the race, followed closely by the Bosberg and then a 10km flat time trial to the finish in Ninove.
A three-time winner of De Ronde at this point, the 1999 season represented a comeback from serious injury for Museeuw, who had crashed horribly at Arenberg in the previous year's Paris-Roubaix and nearly lost a leg to ensuing gangrene.
He won no major races in 1999 but the comeback was complete a year later when he won his second Roubaix, going on to complete the hat-trick in 2002.
