Wood was developed as a much more conventional lefthander with a fastball and a curveball, but he never stuck for long in the majors with the Red Sox or Pirates.

His career didn't take off until he learned the knuckleball. He became a dominating reliever at a time when that wasn't really even a role. No one could hit Wood, and because he threw a knuckleball, there was rarely a day when Wood wasn't available.
