Occasionally, The Spy needs to take a moment to process what just happened. Like that time a Tekken 8 pro lost a match because someone nearby turned on a wireless controller, or when a Russian chess player tried to poison her opponent by smearing mercury all over the board. The Spy will remember that one.

The machinations of big business are rarely as straightforward as simple murder, and the recent EA buyout has left The Spy feeling the kind of disorientation only truly enormous numbers can supply. The $55bn mega-deal – closing in Q1 of the 2027 fiscal year – that sees EA, previously a publicly traded company for the past 36 years, taken private in the hands of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and a private equity firm run by Donald Trump’s son-in-law is a mindbogglingly big one, but in the face of such largeness the plight of small firms must not be forgotten.
