MDL-A POWERHOUSE IN MODERN SHIPBUILDING

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) started as a small Dry Dock in 1774, to service ships of the British East India Company. MDL passed through various ownerships like the P&O lines and the British India Steam Navigational Company, till it was taken over by the Government of India and established as a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence in 1960. Today it is a premier and leading warship building yard producing world-class state-of-theart warships and submarines. MDL has delivered over 802 ships/submarines/ platforms to various customers both in India and abroad. Out of these 43 have been delivered to the Indian Navy, which forms a formidable part of the Fleet of the Indian Navy.

The range of platforms delivered to various customers ranges from Destroyers, Stealth Frigates, Submarines, Missile Boats, Corvettes, Offshore Patrol Vessels, Multipurpose Support Vessels, Offshore Supply Vessels, Dredgers, Tugs and Cargo-cum-Passenger Vessels. Presently, MDL is involved in building four Stealth Destroyers, four Frigates and six Scorpene class submarines for the Indian Navy. In the last 08 years, the shipyard has delivered 05 Destroyers and 05 Submarines to the Indian Navy and launched 04 Frigates of the P17A class.

MDL is the only Shipyard with a proven track record of constructing conventional Submarines and Destroyers. The key capabilities with which MDL has achieved and sustained the reputation of being a premier shipbuilding yard include:
