Chasing ambitious Martian dreams
Geopolitics
|March 2024
India's space programme is poised for another giant leap with the planned Mars lander mission, tentatively scheduled for launch between 2028 and 2030.
-
This ambitious endeavour, led by Dr Nandini Harinath, promises to be a technological marvel, featuring a first-of-its-kind combination – a lander and a miniaturized helicopter. This mission builds upon the success of the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as ‘Mangalyaan,’ which entered Martian orbit in 2014 and exceeded its planned lifespan, sending back valuable data for over eight years.
The proposed mission architecture is what truly sets it apart. The lander, equipped with a suite of advanced scientific instruments, will embark on a mission to unravel the secrets of the Red Planet. It will analyse the Martian soil composition, searching for potential biosignatures that could hold clues about the possibility of past or even present life. Additionally, the lander will delve into the planet's geological history, providing insights into its formation and evolution.
