It is interesting to note that, despite the great name it had as an optical firm, Nikon never offered an 85 mm f/1.2 lens till now. Hence, it is no surprise that once this lens was shown on the road map of Z lenses, Nikon aficionados have been waiting for it with great expectations. Now, it has arrived and joins the select band of very few lenses with this specification. So, how does it perform? Read on to get an exhaustive report on its performance.
Design & Build Quality
This is a very large and heavy lens. It is a shade shorter than the Nikkor 50 mm Z of the same speed but has a much larger body diameter. It uses the same ‘hybrid’ (metal plus poly carb) construction as the other S lenses. There are two rings. The first is very broad and is for manual focusing. The second called the control ring is fully customizable. At the top, there is a ‘faux ring’ that the manual calls a ‘rubber grip’ and that is exactly its purpose! It is very useful for mounting the lens as it is a handful in the true sense of the word.
The usual switch for AF/MF selection is also present. There are seals all over to make the lens dust and moisture-proof.
