How to frame resolutions in a way that feels positive, achievable and pressure-free for children.

HOW TO TALK TO KIDS ABOUT NEW YEAR GOALS

The start of a new year often brings talk of fresh beginnings and big intentions. As adults, we're surrounded by messages about self-improvement - doing more, being better, fixing what feels unfinished. But when it comes to children, goal-setting needs to look and feel very different.

Talking to kids about goals for the year ahead isn't about pushing them to change or improve. It's about helping them notice themselves - what they enjoy, what feels tricky and what they're curious about exploring next. When handled wisely, these conversations can build up their confidence, self-awareness and a healthy relationship with effort. When rushed or pressured, they can do the opposite. The difference lies not in the goals themselves, but in how the conversation begins.

START WITH CURIOSITY

Before introducing any idea of goals, begin with curiosity. Ask open, non-judgemental questions that invite children to reflect in their own way.

You might ask:

• "What was your favourite part of last year?"

• "Was there anything that felt harder?"

• "Is there something you'd like more of this year?"

These questions get kids to begin reflecting. There's no right answer and no pressure to come up with something impressive. For younger children, the answers may be simple or playful - and that's perfectly okay, while older children might take more time to think. All responses are valid. The aim isn't depth, it's creating space for reflection in a way that feels safe and unpressured. When little ones feel there's no right or wrong answer, they're more likely to engage honestly.

SOFTEN THE IDEA OF “GOALS”

For many children, the word “goal” can sound serious or heavy. It may carry an unspoken fear of getting it wrong or not following through. Reframing goals as intentions, hopes or things they'd like to practise can make the idea feel much more approachable.
