Reincarnated G-Wu takeaway's now a word-of-mouth sensation

A family-run Chinese takeaway has returned in a new guise - and hungry villagers in Bramhope are queueing up for a taste. G-Wu, in Leeds Road, is the latest incarnation of a popular homegrown brand based previously in Moortown. It's been open for nine months and owner Melanie Bang, 58, spends her shifts darting between the counter and the kitchen, checking in with chefs and greeting customers by name.

People might already know or know of you from your time in Moortown, and now you're 'just down the road' in Bramhope - reinvented as a stylish, collection-only takeaway with a cosy collection of tables - so how has it all gone?

"We've been so well received, people seem really excited to have us here," said Melanie. "And we're only a postcode away from where we were before, so all of our old customers come along to see us."

And with your customers in mind, G-Wu hasn't had to rely on social media to advertise; word of mouth has been its marketing weapon of choice - and it seems to be working?

"From old Moortown regulars to new Bramhope neighbours, customers are coming in their droves for what we produce - restaurant-quality food even though we're mostly a takeaway."

You started up in 2011 operating out of your original base with 120 covers, is that right?

"We were always really busy - even on weekdays we were packed out."

So why the change in direction?
