Pregnancy is one of the most impactful and joyous events in a woman's life. From conception to birth, the journey is filled with joy, excitement, and a certain anxiety, and therefore, she must be prepared for what it entails, at least when it comes to financial prudence. A key component of the financial plan is securing a comprehensive health insurancepolicy that covers maternity, which can significantly alleviate the financial strain associated with childbirth.
Since not all health insurance plans have maternity coverage, it is wise to opt for a policy that offers such benefitsto ensure financial freedom during pregnancy. From delivery charges to pre-and-post natal expenses, maternity can be an expensive experience for those who are not covered by health insurance.
Maternity Cover
Under a health insurance policy, maternity cover protects expecting mothers and their newborn babies. So, expenses related to pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal care are covered under maternity covers. Men can also opt for the inclusion of maternity covers for their spouses as a part of their medical insurance policy or as a part of a family-floater health policy.
Maternity covers have an age range, and females from 18 to 45 years of age can only opt for this coverage. Women who are already pregnant cannot raise a claim for that particular pregnancy. Moreover, certain policies do not include coverage for more than two births, hence, it is very essential to read the policy wordings before opting for a specific health insurance.
Maternity Waiting Period
The maternity waiting period is the minimum time that a policyholder has to wait to raise a pregnancy claim. Health insurance policies have a mandated waiting period when it comes to maternity coverage. This period varies depending on the insurance provider but usually ranges from 9 months to 6 years. Hence, it is important to note the waiting period before starting the journey to parenthood.
