Plan for nuclear plant sparks new call for crossing

Plans for a new nuclear plant on Anglesey has strengthened the case for a third Menai crossing, says Wales First Minister Eluned Morgan.

Last month, the UK Government announced the Wylfa site would be the location of the first Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) plant in the UK, five years after the development of a large-scale plant collapsed when Hitachi and the UK Government failed to reach a deal over funding.

A third crossing has been on the agenda for years, initially supported by the Welsh Government before they backtracked after the last Senedd election in 2021.

The crossing remains a problem exacerbated by roadworks on the Menai Suspension Bridge and the development of the SMR site will put further pressure on the road network.

Mrs Morgan said: "Obviously the case for a third Menai crossing becomes stronger when you've got that kind of investment in north Wales. I think that strengthens the case for a third crossing, without question."
