With JAMES BURN

FORMER Wales footballer Sam Ricketts was all smiles at Ascot on Saturday after seeing Military Alliance score in the novice hurdle.

Ricketts has racing in his blood as he is the nephew of John Francome, a seven-time champion jump jockey regarded as one of the finest of all time.

‘The 44-year-old instead pursued a career in football and enjoyed a distinguished career, winning 52 caps for Wales, while he is also known for his spells at Swansea, Hull City, Bolton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In the Harry Derham-trained Military Alliance, he has a promising youngster who won at Hereford in April and was able to follow up by denying Nicky Henderson's 4-9 favourite Soomaroy.

“You can never guarantee anything in sport - football or racing - but you can turn up and have a go,” he said.

“Harry prepares them brilliantly and the rest is down to fate, and it was on our side today.

“I’m really pleased and it’s a family affair as my wife Katrina and her family are involved and so are some of mine.
