THE Scarlets have opted to start loan signings Harvey Cuckson and Alex Groves in the second-row for today's clash with the Lions in Johannesburg (12.45pm).

Dwayne Peel has had to contend with a significant injury crisis which has claimed 13 players including captain Josh Macloed along with second-rows Jake Ball, Sam Lousi and Max Douglas.

The situation is particularly stark at lock which has forced the Scarlets to bring in Welsh-qualified lock Cuckson and South African Groves on loan from Bath and the Stormers, respectively.

"A coaching friend of mine once spoke about the rugby gods sometimes working against you," said Peel. "When you have an injury in a certain area then you suddenly seem peppered with them.

"It's very tough on the boys who are fit but they are working hard and we'll get through it."

Peel has handed a first start of the season to exciting utility back Macs Page who partners Johnny Williams in midfield.
