Hughes challenges County to maintain their positive start
Western Mail
|August 16, 2025
NEWPORT County take on Grimsby Town at Blundell Park today aiming to extend their positive start in League Two, and manager David Hughes is confident his squad is up to the challenge, writes Andrew Penman.
The Exiles suffered their first defeat under Hughes on Tuesday night when a much-changed starting XI lost 1-0 to Championship Millwall in the Carabao Cup.
But Hughes was encouraged by the battling display, which followed a win on penalties at Barnet in the cup, a home draw with Notts County and last weekend's 2-1 victory at Crawley Town.
“Winning on the road is important,” said the manager.
“At Crawley we showed real resilience and organisation when they were on top.
“We expect a similar test at Grimsby - a team in good form with the crowd right behind them.
