Councillors to debate asylum seeker motion

FLINTSHIRE councillors will today debate a motion to stop asylumseekers coming to the county while they await a decision on their application - despite being a "county of sanctuary".

- ALEC DOYLE

At full council, members will consider a motion from two independent councillors - cabinet member for housing and communities Cllr Helen Brown, of Hawarden-Aston ward, and Penyffordd ward councillor Roy Wakelam opposing the "placement of individuals without lawful immigration status in Flintshire".

The placement process is legally known as "dispersal". Legally, the UK Government can provide homes to asylum-seekers in any local authority while their case is progressing.

The motion accepts that once cases are decided, those granted asylum could be housed within the county.
