College cuts warning over £25m ‘funding shortfall’

THOUSANDS of young people in Wales could find themselves without college courses in Wales this September amid a £25m-plus funding crisis, bosses have claimed.

College cuts warning over £25m ‘funding shortfall’

ColegauCymru, the body representing Wales’ further education colleges, said courses would be cancelled, jobs shed and learners “turned away”.

The Welsh Government yesterday published its final budget for 2026-27. Figures published by funding body Medr after the first draft budget showed total funding for full-time FE college students was put at £462m.

This presented “an unprecedented challenge,” ColegauCymru chief executive David Hagendyk said as he set up a round of urgent meetings yesterday morning.

Mr Hagendyk said there was still time to increase funding when M§s voted on the budget and said ColegauCymru had been lobbying for more.

However, he conceded that getting the £25m-plus extra he said was needed was unlikely and that this would be a challenge for the next government after May's Senedd election.
