Bellamy blown away by teen star Lawlor after stellar debut
Western Mail
|September 06, 2025
WALES boss Craig Bellamy said he was blown away by debutant Dylan Lawlor, who stood out during his side's narrow 1-0 win over Kazakhstan in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
Kieffer Moore's close-range winner secured a tense 1-0 win in Astana and took Wales above North Macedonia in the race for a place in next summer's finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
But Cardiff City teenager Lawlor was the pick of the bunch in Astana, showing a maturity and confidence which belies his 19 years.
Not only was he assured on the ball, but he produced some crucial defensive interceptions when the hosts were in the ascendancy.
It comes after an impressive start to the season with the Bluebirds, having started all of Cardiff's League One games so far this season as they sit at the top of the table.
He also signed a new three-year deal with the Welsh capital city club last month, before earning his first senior cap for the Wales national team.
It has been some month for the Bedwas teenager, who left his Wales boss mightily impressed.
"Beyond impressed," he told the BBC after the match. "What a player. What a player!
"He was just so impressive. Such a good player. And he was today - and we needed him to be today.
