A wonderful week of VE remembrance and celebration
Western Gazette
|May 15, 2025
WHAT a wonderful week of remembrance and celebration for the VE Day 80 years on. Multi-generational, multi-faith and multi-racial - and everyone remembered together. Now that is a celebration of caring.
Locally, we have been celebrating how a need can be met by generous people, not only with money but also with precious time. Last week, we saw people coming together to celebrate the opening of the Nick Dyke Cricket Nets at the Yeovil Cricket Club. After severe weather last winter, the practice nets, where young players learn their cricketing skills, were devastated. The cost of replacing them seemed prohibitive until the call went out. Grants were chased and received. Also, local people listened, contributed, and a Trust thought they could help out too. In a short period of time replacing those nets seemed almost impossible to the club, until everything came together, and the new nets arrived.
These nets enable the Yeovil Cricket Club to be recognised for its efforts and achievements in the higher realms of the cricketing authorities. They are there for young boys and girls to learn how to bowl; how to defend against a speeding ball hurtling towards the batter, and then hitting it hard enough to be able to score runs.
