Welsh subsidies help land air link with Canada

DIRECT flights from Cardiff to the biggest city in Canada were announced yesterday.
> There will be a direct route to Canada from Cardiff Airport next year
The Welsh airport announced a deal with low-cost airline WestJet for flights to Toronto in probably its biggest route announcement since the Covid pandemic.
The service will begin in May and offer flights four times per week.
Bristol Airport has been a long-term critic of what it views as unfair financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government to Cardiff Airport, with which it competes for passengers.
It launched legal action against the Welsh Government earlier this year.
Jon Bridge, chief executive officer of Cardiff Airport, said: “We're incredibly proud that WestJet has chosen Cardiff Airport as a new UK destination for summer 2026.
