AN ABUSIVE husband has been jailed for raping his wife after she left a ‘harrowing’ audio recording of the attack before her tragic death.

- By CALLUM CUDDEFORD

Ravi Yadav, 46, of Ealing, was jailed for nine years at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday May 1 after he was convicted of raping Gurwinder Kaur, who died of pancreatic cancer in February 2022, aged 48.

Southall Black Sisters (SBS) - who claim they put pressure on police to pursue the charges despite her passing - believes the ruling is one of the first of its kind in the UK.

An SBS spokesperson told MyLondon the prosecution is a “significant acknowledgment that justice can still be sought, even after a survivor's death”

Before her death, Gurwinder, a mum-of-two, told the group she was “relentlessly coerced” into marriage with Yadav at the age of 19, and that he threatened suicide when she refused his proposals.

After their 2004 wedding, the abuse “escalated significantly’ and she suffered “dowry-related harassment, domestic servitude, and daily humiliation” while living in India.

Gurwinder, a Sikh woman, also complained of religious abuse from her Hindu husband, who told her she was ‘less’ than him.
