RACING: THE DERBY THE BOURN SUPREMACY

LAMBOURN leapt out of the shadows to claim an all-the-way Betfred Derby triumph - first in the premier Classic for jockey Wayne Lordan and a record 11th for Aidan O'Brien.

Pre-race Epsom talk centred on O'Brien's Delacroix, the 2-1 market leader, and stablemate The Lion In Winter, favourite for the Derby through the winter but displaced at the head of the betting after defeat in the Dante Stakes at York last month.

But it was Lambourn, second to Delacroix at Leopardstown in March before landing the Chester Vase last month over the full Derby distance, who roared.

Sent into a clear lead, Lambourn, who found favour with punters expecting storms to soften the turf and ratchet up the accent on staying-power - the deluge didn't arrive until after the feature — held a comfortable advantage as the field straightened out of Tattenham Corner.
