Arlene backing creative subjects boost

DAME Arlene Phillips has spoken movingly about growing up poor, as she backs a call to improve access and funding to arts subjects in schools.

Dame Arlene supports Arts and Minds, a campaign led by the National Education Union, launching Tuesday.

Actor Steve Coogan, EastEnders star Kellie Bright and Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall also believe kids from all backgrounds have the right to study creative subjects.

Ex-Strictly judge Arlene, 81, who spoke of her childhood hardships, said such subjects "feed the soul" and can be "the biggest gift" for youngsters.
