Amorim tells unhappy kid: I'm not punishing you... you must fight for your job like Cristiano and Rooney

- TYRONE MARSHALL

RUBEN AMORIM has told Kobbie Mainoo to stay and "fight for his job" at Manchester United.

And the United manager says that the academy graduate should use Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney as his role models.

The United greats both had spells on the Red Devils’ bench, but knuckled down to fight for their Old Trafford futures.

Mainoo is yet to start a league game this season and may leave on loan next month, with Napoli leading the list. But Amorim, whose no-nonsense words echoed that of Old Trafford legend Roy Keane on Friday, said: "Kobbie needs to fight for his job. That is not a bad thing to be on the bench of Manchester United when you are 20-years-old.

"I remember Ronaldo was on the bench, Rooney was on the bench sometimes. Juan Sebastian Veron was not playing. I remember all the history of Manchester United and nobody.
