Stracott Morrison, Australia's conservative Prime Minister, admitted election defeat on Saturday, hours after voters slammed his party's stance on climate change.
Morrison recognised that his Liberal Party, which has governed Australia for the past decade, is having a "tough" day.
"I spoke to the opposition leader and new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, tonight and congratulated him on his election victory," he said to supporters in Sydney.
Albanese's center-left Labor Party was assured of forming the largest party in parliament with about half of the votes counted, but it has yet to secure an outright majority.
A run of climate-focused independent candidates who defeated Morrison's Liberals in once-safe conservative urban districts could still tip the balance of power.
