The Sunday Guardian
|September 21, 2025
Ambush on Assam Rifles sparks protests, mourning, and demands for swift justice.
In a brazen act of violence in an AFSPA denotified area of Manipur, unidentified miscreants attacked a column of Assam Rifles troops moving in vehicles through a built-up area at around 05:50 PM on 19 September 2025.
The vehicle-based column of troops of an Assam Rifles unit was moving on National Highway 2 in the general area, Nambol Sabal Leikai, in Bishnupur District of Manipur, which is an AFSPA denotified area, during hours of darkness. The column came under unprovoked automatic weapons fire from unidentified terrorists on the highway.
In the ensuing action, two soldiers of Assam Rifles lost their lives and five were injured, who have since been evacuated to RIMS and are currently stable. The two martyred include: Nb Sub (GD) Shyam Gurung and Rfn (GD) Ranjeet Singh Kashyap. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility.
