STI hits new high in spite of downbeat session on Wall Street

• STI closes up 0.5%; gainers outstrip losers 274 to 218 • DFI Retail is STI top gainer, Yangzijiang biggest decliner • Region is mixed: Hang Seng, KL up; Nikkei, Kospi down
Local shares hit a new high in trading on March 27 before closing in the black, thanks to solid gains across most sectors.
The positive mood evident all week remained intact to send the Straits Times Index (STI) to as high as 3,991 points in the morning before closing at 3,981.57, up 0.5 per cent or 17.86 points for the day.
Gainers outstripped losers 274 to 218 across the broader market on trade of one billion securities worth $1.4 billion.
