Climber's death: Brazil plans action if Indonesian govt is found negligent in providing assistance

The Brazilian government plans to take the death of its citizen Juliana Marins while climbing Mount Rinjani to a continental human rights body if the Indonesian government is found to have been negligent in providing aid.

The Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU) will take the case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights if the Indonesian government is found negligent.

The DPU announced on its website that it has sent an official letter to "the Federal Police Superintendence in Rio requesting that a police investigation be opened to determine the circumstances of the death".

DPU also said that it had requested a new autopsy on Ms Marins' body, based on a request made by the victim's sister.

"The death certificate issued by the Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta was based on an autopsy performed by Indonesian authorities, but it did not provide conclusive information about the exact time of death," the DPU said.

The Brazilian Constitution establishes the DPU at both federal and state levels, as a right to poor people, who must formally declare they cannot afford to have regular legal aid.

"We are still waiting for the report prepared by the Indonesian authorities.
