National Basketball Association (NBA) champions the Boston Celtics are being sold to a group headed by a California private equity mogul for US$6.1 billion (S$8.1 billion), a record price for a US sports franchise, the club's owners confirmed on March 20.

Boston Basketball Partners LLC said in a statement it had agreed to sell the iconic team to the consortium led by William Chisholm, managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group.
"If approved, the new ownership group will buy a majority of the team this summer at an initial valuation of US$6.1 billion," the statement said.
That would surpass the US$6.05 billion paid for the National Football League's Washington Commanders in 2023.
