10 killed in US truck attack; suspect shot dead by police

At least 10 people were killed and more than 35 injured after a pick-up truck was driven into a large crowd in Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter early on Jan. 1, a city government agency said.

The suspect died after exchanging gunfire with the police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a press statement on Jan. 1.

The driver crashed the truck and then died following a shoot-out with police officers, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, reported The New York Times.

The emergency authorities said the incident took place at around 3:15 a.m. local time.

CBS News reported witnesses saying a truck rammed into the crowd before its driver jumped out and started exchanging gunshots with the police.

A white truck crashed through a barricade "at a high rate of speed," witnesses Jim and Nicole Mowrer told CBS.

"Once it was past us, we did hear gunfire, saw police running in that direction," Ms. Mowrer said.

"We stayed in the alcove until the gunfire stopped, went out to the street and came across a lot of people who had been hit. We wanted to see what we could do to help."
