SIR, The recent inauguration of the magnificent Jagannath Dham temple in the tourist town of Digha by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is clearly an attempt to woo the majority Hindu community in the state.

Astute

Recent communal violence in Murshidabad and charges of Muslim appeasement have portrayed her as anti-Hindu among a large section of Hindus. Obviously, Mamata Banerjee is desperate to shed her anti-Hindu image to avoid any electoral loss in the assembly polls next year.

She also fears that implementation of CAA can benefit the BJP in assembly polls. However, the way she inaugurated the Jagannath Temple in Digha shows that she is a seasoned politician and knows very well how to beat her political opponents at their own game. Her temple move has put the BJP in a fix.

Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh's visit to the inauguration has triggered party rift. In fact Ms Banerjee does not want to let BJP polarise Hindu votes in its favour at any cost.
