2016 recruited teachers, candidates left distraught after verdict

Soma Das, a cancer-affected teacher in a state government-aided school in Nalhati in Birbhum district retained her job while the Supreme Court on Thursday invalidated appointment of 25,752 teachers and other staff mainly group C and D categories in West Bengal on charge of large-scale corruption in selection process.
The apex court exempted Soma on 'humanitarian grounds' while cancelling the entire panel of school service recruitment process organised by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in 2016.
The Bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld the Calcutta High Court verdict given in April 2024 which retained appointment of Soma as a Bengali teacher at Madhura High School, under Nalhati block-I.
