Significant changes made by the BJP in organisational ranks in Asansol and Purulia districts ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls

In a major reshuffle of its organisational structure and a desperate bid to perform well in next year's assembly polls, the state BJP has appointed a hardcore Hindutva leader to the Asansol District Committee and a Kurmi leader to the Purulia District Committee to attract voters.
Purulia is a BJP stronghold in South Bengal, which the saffron brigade is keen to retain, while Asansol was once its only bastion in West Bengal. Debtanu Bhattacharya has been appointed as the new district president of the Asansol organisational district, replacing Bappa Chatterjee. Similarly, Shankar Mahato has been appointed as the Purulia district president, replacing Vivek Ranga.
The BJP won three out of nine seats in West Burdwan district during the 2021 assembly polls—Asansol South, Kulti, and Durgapur West. In Purulia district, the BJP secured six out of nine assembly seats.
