Iyer's IPL brilliance sparks Test buzz, PBKS dream of first title

Iyer becomes the first captain in the IPL's history to reach back-to-back IPL finals with 2 different teams

- STAESMAN NEWS SERVICE

The calls for Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in the Test team grew louder after the stylish right-hander once again displayed extraordinary leadership and an extreme level of calmness under pressure to single-handedly carry the Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final after 11 years of desperation.

Iyer slammed an unbeaten 87 off 41 deliveries to help his side record a clinical five-wicket win and knock five-time title-holders Mumbai Indians out of the tournament in the high-octane second qualifier played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad late on Sunday night.

The result means that the IPL 2025 final on Tuesday will be a rematch of the first qualifier with Punjab pitted against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a battle of Reds, with one thing certain—there will be a new champion this year.

More than the outcome of the contest against MI, it was Iyer's leadership and batting genius that stood out, with multiple commentators batting for his inclusion for the upcoming Test series against England, starting June 20. The formats might be different but going by Iyer's current form, the demand does look legitimate.
