Central BJP directs Bengal unit to organise statewide Rath Yatra to counter CM Mamata's Digha temple event

Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been directed to organise statewide Rath Yatra-related programmes on 27 June.
The party's central leadership has emphasised that Hindu saints and members of various Hindu religious communities, including the Matua sect, must be included in the celebrations.
Additionally, they have instructed that financial assistance be provided to them if necessary.
Political analysts note that the BJP—both at the state and central levels—is increasingly concerned about the public response to the Jagannath temple established by the West Bengal government in Digha.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's plan to personally pull the Rath (chariot) during the festival is seen as a significant religious outreach effort.
This has prompted the BJP to take strategic measures to counter the impact of the state government's initiative.
