As the Bharatiya Janata Party celebrates its electoral success in West Bengal, the labour wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), is preparing to expand its role in the state.

- ASHOK CHATTERJEE

With around 50,000 members in Bengal, BMS already has a presence in several sectors. It is the lead union in postal services and the second largest in the power sector, according to RSS sources.

Jishnu Basu, Prachar Pramukh (East) of the RSS, acknowledged that BMS’s penetration in the unorganised sector remains limited. “It is a big challenge to ensure there are no atrocities on workers in the unorganised sector. There must be no tolabaji and no oppression of labourers,” he said.

BMS has been holding regular meetings, with national leaders visiting the state to strengthen the organisation.
