Governor's role

SIR, At the heart of democracy is the fact that the Chief Ministers of Indian States are elected by the public, while governors are appointed by the Centre.

The Constitution has laid out a clear framework where governors have limited discretion and role in the government. The established norm is that as an independent and bipartisan authority, a Governor needs to discharge his duties impartially, irrespective of his political affiliations. But for over a decade now, India has witnessed the weaponization of the Governor's office. State after state not ruled by the BJP has had Governors sitting on Bills indefinitely, attempting to overrule state decisions and generally making life difficult for duly elected governments. They have become extensions of the politics of the BJP.
