Bengal revives Charra airstrip plan ahead of polls

The state government is mulling a proposal to place Purulia on the aviation map of the country, barely six months before next year's Assembly elections.
Purulia is the most backward district in West Bengal. The state government has begun the process of reopening and revamping the abandoned airport at Charra, situated barely 8 kilometres from Purulia town. If the project is implemented, the government believes it will help significantly uplift socioeconomic development in the district.
During World War II, the British built an airstrip at Charra in Purulia's Mofussil Thana area for emergency landings. Since then, it has been abandoned and the vast infrastructure has remained unused for several decades.
The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government now wants to convert the abandoned runway of the WWII airstrip into a new civilian airport.
