SC bats for UCC to address personal law complexities

Emphasising the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), to address the legal complexities arising from the personal law and for ensuring the rights of women, the Supreme Court on Tuesday, however, left it to the legislative wisdom of the legislature to enact such a law.
Observing that striking down the provisions of personal law without a comprehensive legislative framework in place to step in could create a legal vacuum, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice R Mahadevan said in the absence of a uniform code, declaring personal laws void would create a vacuum.
