Inthe first major election since President Donald Trump began his second term, Democrats scored aseries of high-profile victories, claiming historic wins in Virginia, New York,and many other states. The results signal ashiftin the political landscape, with the party's moderate and progressive wings both claiming momentum as they set their sights on next year’s midterm elections.

Major Democratic wins included Zohran Mamdaniin New York City, who will become the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first South Asian to hold the office, and one ofits youngest mayors in modern history.

Mamdanirain onaplatform addressing economic inequality and cost-of-living issues, including a rent freeze for residents of rent-stabilised units, increased affordable housing construction, free and faster bus service, free childcare, city-owned grocery stores to combat high food costs, and tax hikes on the wealthy.

Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the Virginia governor's race, becoming the state's first female governor aftera fiercely contested battle against Republican Winsome Earle-Sears.
