Ponting convinced Root can surpass Tendulkar's Test batting record

Hours after England batter Joe Root surpassed him to become the second highest run-getter in Test cricket, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting said he is convinced there is "absolutely no reason" why the talismanic batter cannot surpass India's Sachin Tendulkar as the all-time leading run-scorer.

During his sublime knock of exactly 150 in the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Joe Root climbed from fifth to second on the all-time Test run-scorers list, surpassing Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis in the process.

On yet another landmark day, 34-year-old Joe Root brought up his 38th Test century, drawing level with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara in fourth place on the all-time hundreds list. He later surpassed former Australia captain Ricky Ponting's tally of 13,378 Test runs upon reaching 120, earning a rousing standing ovation from the packed Old Trafford crowd.
