Odissi Meets Ballet: 'Indian Swan Lake' Takes Odisha's Dance Legacy to Global Stage

Odisha's classical dance heritage has found a global resonance with a groundbreaking Indo-European collaboration titled Indian Swan Lake — a unique fusion of the iconic German ballet Swan Lake and the Indian epic tale of Nala Damayanti from the Mahabharata.
Created by Padma Shri awardee and acclaimed Odissi exponent Dr Aruna Mohanty, the production masterfully intertwines the lyrical elegance of Odissi with the structured grace of European ballet, united by the symbolic motif of the swan.
It is the magna opus of Guru Aruna Mohanty, remarked dance critics.
The Indo-German production was staged to packed houses at three venues across Germany in June, following months of research and joint rehearsals between artists from Odisha and Germany. Its overwhelming success has paved the way for an India tour in 2026.
