Intl Conclave Wants Compulsory Climate Science Education at Schools

A two-day international conclave on 'Climate Change and Global Warming' held at the SOA Deemed to be University here has recommended development and implementation of compulsory climate science modules at the school and undergraduate level.

The modules should be co-designed with scientists and educators while community-driven participatory science projects should be included in the academic framework, Prof. Uma Charan Mohanty, Distinguished Professor at SOA and General Chair for the conclave, said.

There was also a need for community-centric awareness programs through campaigns on Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction, afforestation and sustainable land use planning, he said.

Steps should be taken to include the youth in such campaigns through initiatives like climate Olympiads, model climate-resilient village demonstrations, summer science camps and interactive climate symposia for youth, Prof. Mohanty said.
