Days after charred remains of a 19-year-old female college student were found in her house in Kendrapara district, police on Sunday arrested the victim's ex-boyfriend on charges of mentally and sexually harassing and driving her to commit self-immolation.
The shocking incident took place in Kathiapada village in Pattamundai (Rural) police station area on August 6, as the victim allegedly immolated herself at her house following her former boyfriend's threat to upload her intimate photographs on social media.
The accused, Pramod Behera, named in the FIR lodged by the victim's father, has been arrested. He abetted the crime by blackmailing the victim through obscene video clips. As a result, she took the extreme step, said Kendrapara Superintendent of Police, Siddharth Kataria. He has been booked under sections 296 (obscene act), 75 (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking), and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the BNS and Sections 66-E and 67-A of the IT Act.
