PORT Vale writer CLIVE YOULTON begins a series of features looking back at the Valiants' promotion season. First up is how the summer unfolded...

FIRST came the apology as the reflections on Port Vale's previous season 2023/24 began.

That League One campaign had been a memorable one for all the wrong reasons and Port Vale 's joint owner Carol Shanahan OBE issued a message on social media addressing the supporters.

A 25th League One defeat, at Bolton Wanderers, confirmed the club's relegation to League Two.

She delivered a “heartfelt” apology but also included a galvanising address to those supporters who felt let down.

“We need to rebuild, and I'm determined to ensure that rebuild includes you,” she said.

“However, what happens on the pitch has always been, and will continue to be, the priority.

“I strongly believe that in Darren Moore, we have the right person to lead our development in terms of football operations and, despite our relegation, we will ensure he and his team are given the resources needed to carry that out this summer and beyond.

“I know Darren shares my view that pride in the badge should be non-negotiable when it comes to Port Vale, and together we're absolutely determined to bring success back to this club.

“Securing promotion to League One two years ago was one of the highlights of my life, and I know we can do it again.”
